Will tilted his head back against the passenger seat headrest and closed his eyes, pretending to rest. But what he really wanted to do was think. He was grateful Tess couldn't read his mind.

She seemed to be healing at lightning speed—which introduced a whole new set of dilemmas. How did one ask a woman to kind of keep him in mind. Not that she was ready for a relationship right now. She was still within the shadow of her last one.

But maybe he could ask her if, when she felt ready for another emotional involvement, she'd call him. Let him know.

Ridiculous. Lame as hell. He had no idea of how to go about making sure he stayed on Tess's emotional radar. He had no idea if he even had the right to bring up something like this, what with her broken heart.

But damn it, she didn't look as if her heart were broken. Yes, there had been a few bad days at the motel, but Will had a feeling that Tess's subconscious had already known that the relationship with Paul was a bust.

She'd gone into that church and asked that question for a reason. She'd known that the whole thing was wrong, wasn't going to work, was going up in flames. She'd sensed it, and thank God Paul had seen fit to destroy any illusions she might have held about him once and for all.

The only thing Will knew was that he didn't want to miss this opportunity with Tess and hear from Brooke, a year or two later, that she'd hooked up with some nice guy and was married and having babies.

He was shocked by how strongly he wanted to be that guy.

Stranger things had happened in relationships. Stranger things happened every day. He'd gone out enough, had enough relationship experience to know when there were possibilities between two people. He'd had two serious relationships with women he'd genuinely liked and loved. He knew you couldn't always predict how you'd find the next significant woman.

This had to be one for the books.

The other thing that amazed him was how strongly he wanted Tess to be his final relationship. He thought about her a lot, and he knew he'd met his match. Will was a man who accepted what life threw his way.

How could he know this in just a few days, meeting her again after all these years? He didn't know how; he just knew it felt right and he didn't want to mess it up. But how was he going to proceed?

His cell rang.

"Elaine!"

"How's my girl?"

"Great to hear from you. Sugar's fine. She ate part of my breakfast this morning, begging shamefully. She's loving all the new sights and smells and has created quite a friendship with Toby."

"I'll have to meet that darling little dog. And the van? It's running all right?"

"Doing fine, running well, nothing out of the ordinary. We're in Nebraska, about a day and a half from Boulder."

"And Tess?"

"What do you mean?" Even
